Model numbers explained
Below you will find the historic evolution of the Tamiya RC model number series, and the explanation of the current model numbers used by Tamiya.
The history of the 58xxx RC model numbers
- The numbers are Tamiya Corp. production numbers.
- The first RC car from Tamiya had number RA-1201, "RA" is the group (Radio Controlled?), "12" is for scale (1/12th) and the "01" is a serial number.
- In 1983 the Group changed to "58" and the Scale bit was removed (now it is "5801")
- In 1987/88 Tamiya saw that a two-digit serial number was not enough, so a "0" was added in-between the 58 and serial number. So the car earlier named RA-1016, is today named 58016.
- In 2005 the car number 58339 was released.
