Not really, other than Matchbox plastic plane kits in the late 1970's |

I can't believe it's been over a year since I last built anything like this... anyway, I got back in the mood & so started on a roughly 1:10 scale styrene, stylized (or, not entirely accurate) version of a Colchester "Bantam" lathe ...
Starting on the stand ... Lathe bed parts ... Bed assembled, motor/gearbox housings, belt cover ... Bulk of chuck turned from DIY 18mm square bar ... Couple of turned rings added, + chuck jaws ... I thought these looked very poor, so turned them down for a better match to about 1/2 the size ... Shaped & sanded, 60, 240, 400 & 1000 grit ... All the bits so far glued up, splash guard added ... There's still an awful long way to go yet, but the basic structure is there. |

Started on the detail bits:
Bed rails are bits of square dremmelled & sanded down: Top tray parts .... ... & assembled: Basic handwheel shaping (on the lathe, from 3mm sheet): Some drilling, dremmelling, filing & sanding: front skimmed down, spacer added on back: Tailstock done: All those bits fitted, along with power box, stop/start buttons, drawer handle, brake bar, ground bolt tabs, 2x info panels, cross slide drive teeth, power feed, guide rails & trim on top of the splash guard ... just a load of levers, cross slide, tool post & lamp to go ... |

Each of the squares on the cutting matt are 10mm (1cm) Nice work JR If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate

@ hay ewe - andy is correct, but I put a 6"/150mm ruler in too
Cross slide was redonkulously fiddly & time consuming... Looking good so far - I cheated a bit with the control levers, obviously they're sewing pins ... I still have to do the coolant pipework & anglepoise lamp... I tried the body 3 times in styrene but it just wasn't happening... doing it in aluminium brings it's own problems, but hopefully weight won't be one of them: hollowed out it weighs 3g. |
