Tamiya's second RC model was also based on a racing Porsche, the 935, which was an evolution of the 934. Tamiya made the decor according to 1976 World Champion Jacky Ickx & Jochen Mass, but also made stickers for their team mates Rolf Stommelen & Manfred Schurti. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass (#1) were hired by Porsche in 1976 as the primary drivers in both the 935 and 936! Ickx and Mass scored victories in the 6-Hour season opener at Mugello and the subsequent Vallelunga 6 Hours. The 935 didn't just win these races -- it dominated! The organizing body soon declared the Porsche air-air intercooler to be illegally placed and so Porsche was forced to relocate it. In doing so, they had no choice but to adopt a heavier and more complicated water-air intercooler. Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti (# 3) teamed up for three out of seven rounds of the 1976 Group 5 Championship for Makes. Driving the Martini-liveried Porsche 935, the duo were unable to finish the Nürburgring 1000km when a distributor failed only 9 laps into the event. At the second last race of the season, a 6-Hour event at Watkins Glen, the pair finished third. The Championship battle still came down to the final 6-Hour race at Dijon where Ickx and Mass by themselves could not have earned Porsche a title. It was the third place that Schurti and Stommelen earned, driving car #3, providing the critical points that secured the World Championship for Porsche! The 1976 World Championship marked the arrival of the greatest competition machine ever made. The Porsche 935 would earn countless victories in races and on tracks of every description, from sprints to 24-hour endurance races at Daytona and Le Mans! The 935/77 (first pictures) should not me mixed with the more sleek looking 935/78 (last picture), popularly called 'Moby dick'
