List of Cars / Motor Pinions 12 years 6 months ago #2969

The "what pinion do I need for _x_" question seems to be a recurring one - and there's not much information about, especially on what pitch pinions need to be ... I thought if we collated what we do know for sure, it might help.

If you post what you know of pinions - tamiya number reference, car name, number of teeth and pitch, also the Tamiya part number (if you have it) - I'll add it to this post & make a note of where the credit is due :)

An overview in the form of a spreadsheet and more pinion details can be found in the second post of this thread.

Notes:

32dp pinions are very close to 0.8mod pinions and may be substituted at your own risk.

48dp and 0.6 mod will mesh fine - but are not the same outer diameter, so are generally _not_ a suitable replacement

Re: List of Cars / Motor Pinions 12 years 6 months ago #2974

Legend

Supplied = pinions supplied by the kit
Mod = metric module of the gears
Number = separate part number as listed in the manual
Spare = spare part number for supplied pinion as listed in the manual (or guide book for the first 50 models)
Alternative = alternative part numbers to replace kit supplied
Range = the known pinions that can possibly be used on the car (not necessarily with kit supplied parts)

When " - " is used, that indicates the first, last and everything in between is included.
The use of " , " means a separation, so "15,17T" would mean 15T and 17T. And 16 is excluded.
Details that are referred to in any of the columns can be found further on in this post.

First list is a work in progress...

Details 1

58035 Wild Willy, 58036 Audi Quattro Rally, 58037 Opel Ascona 400 Rally and 58039 Willy's Wheeler all use the same gearbox. But the Wild Willy has a different gearbox plate and a 15T pinion. The other cars use 18T.

Details 2

The 18T pinion listed in the range (50192, 3515006 or 9805997) is used with a 540 motor.
Other settings (16 or 19T) are possible with the 50205 Frog differential gear set.
Also see second part of details 3.

Details 3

Spare pinions are listed as 50239, 50240 and 50192.
Alternatives for the 18T 0.8 mod pinion are 3515006 and 9805997.

Normal setup is 18T pinion with 50T spur.
High speed setup (on road) is 19T pinion with 49T spur.
Low speed setup (off road) is 16T pinion with 52T spur.

Details 4

Alternative for 16T pinion is 3510001.
Alternative for 17T pinion is 3510002.
Alternative for 20T pinion is 3510005.

Details 5

Alternatives for the 18T 0.8 mod pinion are 3515006, 9805997 or 50192.

Details 6 ("959" chassis)

16T pinion is used with 41T drive gear.
18T (only on flat pavement) with 40T drive gear.

Details 7

The 18T pinion listed in the range (50192, 3515006 or 9805997) is used with a 540 motor.
Also see 58043 Grasshopper in the first post for further details.

Details 8 (DF-01, TA01 and TA02 chassis)

The Skyline speed tuned gears are an optional part with number 53127.

Standard spur gear (74T) - 16T to 21T
Speed tuned (69T) - 21T to 25T
Speed tuned (66T) - 24T or 25T

All 0.6 mod metric (metric module) or "Tamiya AV"

58099 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo (TA01)
58100 Top Force (DF-01)

Overview and a guide to which holes to use in the motor mount :

Details 9 (Group C chassis)

Re: List of Cars / Motor Pinions 12 years 6 months ago #2975

How to tell what "pitch" your gear is by measuring ...

Gear pitch will be one of two types imperial (diametral pitch, aka diametrical pitch, dp or simply pitch) - mostly found on US and UK made cars - e.g. Associated & Mardave; or metric - module or mod - mostly found on Japanese made cars - e.e Tamiya.

Dealing with the "imperial" side first, gears will be 32dp, 48 dp or 64dp, to find out which, you need to count the number of teeth, and divide that by the measurement in inches (measured from one land {flat at the bottom of the gap between 2 teeth} across the centre to the opposite land.

For example, I had a middle period RC10 with an 81T spur gear, with a diameter (across the lands) of 1.63" - which gives a pitch, thanks to my not very accurate measurement, of 49.5 - close enough to 48dp.

My Mardave Meteor on the other hand, has a spur gear with 28 teeth, and a diameter of 0.83 inches - which comes out at 33.9 - again taking into account the fact I measured in mm & converted, + rounding = 32dp.

Metric pinions (0.8 mod, 0.6mod, 0.4mod, etc), as found on Tamiya cars though are slightly different - the module is found by dividing the pitch diameter in millimetres by the number of teeth - pitch diameter is measure from one pitch point across the centre to the opposite pitch point: if you look at a gear tooth, it's not a straight edge from the bottom of the tooth to the top - the point where the angle changes is the "pitch point"

A couple of examples:

A pinion taken from a Frog had a pitch diameter was 15mm, divided by 19 teeth equals 0.789, or with rounding, 0.8 mod.

A "mystery" pinion I had in my box of bits has a pitch diameter of 11mm, divided by 18 teeth = 0.61111, or 0.6 mod.

Had a good look at this one today :

58073 - Thunder Dragon - 13T to 17T 0.8 mod metric - basic gear 15T.

:)

@JR : 32dp can be added at liberty... ;)
Would it be an idea to also add the Tamiya parts numbers?

Thanks Edou, have added a note re 32dp pinions in the first post. Re Tamiya reference numbers, sure, if people have them :)

Re: List of Cars / Motor Pinions 12 years 5 months ago #3098

Tamiya reference numbers

I'll add them for the cars I've posted. Might save the searcher another step in the process. :)

Would really like to get to the bottom of the mod/pitch question.
TC members seem to prefer (hard) diametrical pitch pinions. Rather plastic than metal grind in the gearbox.
Tamiya should match better but wear faster. Hence the metal grind.
Using a car intensively will naturally create wear either way. Maintenance would be key...
See if I can find out what the Dutch RC racers' tend to do.

What can make it a bit more confusing is that some brands seem to use both measurements at the same time...
Even for 48dp and 0.6 module.
In that case it's worth figuring out what it actually is - can't be both simultaneously.

Similar contemplations of mine have been merged into this message for the purpose of topic compactness :

Okay, I think I can finally conclude for myself that 32dp is a reasonable substitute for a 0.8 mod pinion.
There are comments on the net advising against it but people having actually used the set up report it should work.
The small disclaimer concerning this couldn't hurt though I think... ;)

Kind of baffling it took me so long to determine the buggy pinions are all 0.8 mod.
Getting side tracked can happen that way. There's a good saying for this in Dutch...
Sometimes you're so deep into the forest, you don't see the trees anymore.

I'll get back on the parts numbers...

Another good alternative for Tamiya 0.8 mod pinions would be the hard steel equivalent by Robinson.
These have a shaft diameter of 5mm though and need an adaptation to 3.2mm - which is also available.

:cheer:

Last update concerning 0.8 mod pinons :

See if I can find out what the Dutch RC racers' tend to do.

Responses have been both useage of 32dp pinons and the Robinson's 0.8 mod - leaning a bit more towards the last.
The adaptation referred is called a "5mm to 1/8 inch reducer sleeve" on the list here.
Don't know why they use the forward slashes.

Robinson 0.8 module pinions

They also have a line of 32dp 1/8 inch shaft thus direct fit.
Note that even they say on their website that the two measurements are interchangeable.

If you don't mind, and if the list gets more complete, I can add this to the DataBase ?
