SWAT trailer (King Blackfoot bed based) 10 years 3 months ago #26685

Saw in a older thread there was an interest in my trailer builds, so I gonna post up the orginal build thread from some other forum...

I wanted to make a trailer for my SWAT Ford.

My broken Tamiya King Blackfoot donated the bed as the body was beond repair..

Chop shop.....

Then I made a box with 3 sides, as I want to open the tailgate.
After messuring I cut the sides 45mm high and then glued them together...

My plan was to cut the bed floor out so I a small egde to guide me, but the material left broke so I gonna glue seperate parts to the styrene box.
I use 1.5mm styrene to make the box.

I found out that it is esayer to cut the wheel whels before I glue the bed sides on.

One side glued and drying.

Beginnig to look something...

Two batteries are easy to fit, and I'm certain that I can get 3 to fit

I can get a rc to fit, but not the size we are used to

Front wall is on.

Tailgate still fits

I got my chassis from my chassis maker.
The rails are made from 12.5x7.5 square alu tube that are welded together with Durafix rods and heat.

I think this will be bullet and bomb proof

I will grind and sand it when I'm finished with the trailer.
The long rod is a alu 6x4mm that will be secured by a 4mm locknut in the rear.
The all thread rod the pinch hook is epoxied with metal epoxi, same method I used on my project bugbuddy trailer..

Just layed the frame onto the underside of the bed, not bolted down yet on this picture.

Frame and bed bolted together...

Gonna make a box that will hide the 9v batt for the lights.

The rear end

Screws will be changet for some button head ones when finish.

Started on the suspension.

As allways I want a funcsional suspension set up, so I basicly used the same set up as on my bugbuddy trailer since if worsk like a charm.

I can give you guys one tip for those who want to build a trailer with leaf set up.
In your boat hardware store I bet they have those wire clamps as pictured below or similar.
If you get hold of these for 3mm wires, ditch the bottom part so you sit back with the U bolts.
These fit 5mm wheel axle perfect

These are the parts that make the main suspension set up.

As I did with the bugbuddy trailer I took some HL lift blocks and made a groove so the axle can sit in, this center the axle to the spring.
I also cut of the 6 ribs as I don't need them.

One spring mounted together..

And with the wheelaxle on..

Had to bend the tow bar a little..

Was not totaly happy with the tow bar, so I bent it some more...

What a monster, great skill's mate :)
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

Seem that I forgot to post the rest of the build thread on here.

Better to continue then...

I glued some Dubro hinges with CA.
Gonna laminate multiple layers of styrene to get the rigth depth and to make the hinges to be secured properly.

Here are the tailgate closed.

Inside

Tailgate open, had to place som weigth on it to let it sit open, due the hinges has some resistance since they got a few drops of CA on them..

Underside.

I will make a rollpan/skidplate under the rear section of the chassis to hide the big nut and to let it glide over the terrain.

Hinges has to get a few drops of oil on them when the trailer are finished to loosen up the tailgate.

I will also make tailligths with 5mm leds when the tailgate is finished.
In front of the bed there are gonna be a small box that will hide the 9v batt.

Almost forgott, the tailgate will be stying closed with some small magnets that I ordred via ebay.
And there are gonne be small chain on each side to hold it when open..

The backside or inside if you will, is now on.
In the end the tailgate has 3 layers of 1.5mm styrene and one 0.5mm.
Also made a handel that dosen't work..

The small holes on each side will house the magnets.
They got too close to the center of the talgate, but I won't change that now..

Tailgate open. I gonna putty the underside of the styrene plate so you won't see under it.

The hight where it stands now.
It's possible that I will add some helper springs due that I now use some Trail Finder springs and they are a bit on the soft side.

Not sure if I start on the putty job or I start on the tail lights next.
Time will show.

I have also changed the tires for som Grip Doctor and the plan is to use the same black 1.9 Axial beadlocks as on my SWAT Ford...

This will be the towing veichle

Has started on the light buckets.
Each bucket will get clear red pvc glass and there gonna be 2 led's in both light cluster.

The tailgate has got some small magnets.

For now I have just mounted som small steel L shaped brackets so the magnets has something to hold on to.

Not easy to see in this pic, but I have mounted one extra helper spring due it was too soft on the first long trail test I did not too long ago...

Have started to glue the glass to the light cluster.

The box that will hold the 9V batt for the running lights..

And in my random stuff draw, I had this T shaped plastic bit that fitt the bill nicely for the on/off switch.

And it fits perfectly right before one of the tires.
Not rubbing anywhere:nice:

Diffrent weiw...

Has tested the load capabelity on this thing:D

I can get 5 7.2V batteries to fit inside the bed:chug:

2 batteries is a nice weigth to get the trailer to move scale like.
3 batteries is just a bit too heavy to be practial on the trails.
4 batterieswill work with a couple of mm to clear the wheel arches.
5 batteries. one of the tires is rubbing the whole time in the wheelarch.

I will also make some cargo boxes out of some old servo boxes.
My plan is to cover them with some balsa wood and stain them afterwards...

A jerry can will be fitted in front of the 9V batt box.

Since the Axial 1.9 beadlocks is hex driven, I will use some HPI hex adapters (the ones that convert Lunchbox etc to hex system).
I gonna grease the axle up when I'm finish so the adapter can spin freely as possible...

First coat of white Hamarite paint

Had to scrap the first tryes with the PVC sheet.
And the it struck me-heat gun, and a couple of sec later they was good to go.

TLT drive cups is perfect as a long 5mm spacer:nice:
You can alsp see the HPI hex adapter..

On/off switch mounted.

The first light bucket ready , need some black paint on the backside of the cluster when the trailer is painted.

Just as I was to beginn to fint my bondo stuff, I notice my can has gotten to old and the was only a soup on top and a stiff mass in the bottom of the jar..

Time to buy some more tomorrow...

More pics

Has started on a rear skid/ roll pan.
This will also hide the big locknut in the rear.

I also found some nice L brackets to act as tie downs for the cargo..

The 9V batt box.

The Axial 1.9 beadlocks and SDI tires matches perfect with each others as you can see

The other light bucket is ready to go.

I put on 70g of weights in each wheel to help the COG a little bit..

And tested them on the trailer to see how it looked, and it came out as I had planned in my head:lol:
Truck + trailer is 84cm long total bumper to bumper:blink::cool:, that'a 33"...

Naked chassis without tow bar.

What's this?????

That is my new cargo box, aka my old servo box
After a bit miss happ when hotgluing, I now has 8 burn finger tips.
It was major pain then and there, as the glue is HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fine now tho..., just a few blems on a couple of fingers.
Lotion with Alho vera did wonders for my finger tips:nice:

I didn't make the box perfect as I wanted it to look a bit used.

Skid in the making...

I was empty for the lacouer I wanted to use, so I painted the cargo box in brown first and then weathered it with some flat black on a sponge to age it a bit...

Painted chassis

My paint booth

Nearly there....

Wasen't happy with the finish of the paint job, so I think I will re do it during next winter...

Cargo box works perfectly

Chains are coming later on the tailgate...
