Richard's 4x4 Lunchbox with DF01 drivetrain. 2 years 11 months ago #65694

Some may have seen I asked for TA01/02-DF01 chassis templates.

The reason is this build which I have been thinking more of lately.
Was time to pull the victims from the shelfs.

Donor is this incomplete DF01 Manta Ray.

And this Lunchbox, put together of spare parts.

And this is the general idea.

Managed to mount the front gearbox, using the servo holes in the chassis.
Rubber bands is to hold it about where it needs to sit.

As you can see, the front bulkhead of the Lunchbox chassis still fits, as do the bumper.
This is after a tad trimming of the bulkhead on the backside, basicly removing where the standard arms fit.

The propeller putput is clear of the chassis.

The reason for the rubber bands are the styrene mount which put things in a bit tension.
It will later be replaced by a bent metal piece.
This is just for the moment to locate the gearbox in the correct location and take measurements.

And with the body on to locate the rear transmission location.

This is about where it gonna sit.

The propeller output clears here too.

The orginal gearbox holders needs to be trimmed down to clear the motor, but things mostly fits.

And to make this a bit harder for myself, I have decided to make this just bolt on. So no mods to the chassis itself.
This way I can turn this back to a standard Lunchbox if I want too.

Measured the distance between the front and gearbox bolt holes and 168mm seems to be the ticket.
Hope I can start on the chassis plates later this week.

Wheels will either be standard Lunchbox with TG10 wheelaxles to convert them to modern drive train.
Or GF01/G6-01 wheels with normal hex drive.
They will be fitted with normal Lunchbox tires as I want this to look like a Lunchbox.

So far I have not seen any done this before, at least not documented.

BTW: Which different width arms are there for the DF01/TA01/02 series?

TA01/02 as the smallest?
Hummer in the middle?
Manta Ray etc as widest?

May need to play around with the width.
Lunchbox is 290mm on the outside of the tire so I will try to match that.

TA01 has small arms TA02 has wider front arms and rear not straight ones. Hummer has similar rear arms of the the TA02 but heavier and in 2 parts. And df01 long buggy arms. But you already know that. :D

Thank you.
I have even seen someone have converted a TA02 to M chassis spec
Should have a few options then :-)

Does someone have both GF01 and Lunchbox wheels in their spare parts bin?
Wonder how much different the offset is between them..
Obviously the GF01 needs a hex and Lunchbox the Lunchbox/Hornet wheel adapter to be able to fit
