Interestingly though, cold water's not renowned for that.... worked in this case though!
I'm still undecided about sticking a new motor in it though (Or rather the guts from a new one, to preserve vintage looks) - I suspect it would improve matters, but for the amount I'm likely to use it now it looks posh & shiny, I really can't be bothered!
Next time I'm in the shed doing toy car stuff, it really needs to be finishing the TXT so I can move on to other things
