Finally finished - topped up the shock fluid and fired her up for the first time since 1987. It was just as thrilling and FAST and fragile as I remember! About 5 minutes into our first run my son crashed it into the curb crushing the front nose of the original body shell and bending the aluminum front plate. He was gutted. I told him that’s exactly what happened to me the first time I ran the car when I was his age (11). We brought it back in and straightened it out. Then, brought it to the baseball diamond and got very dirty in the sand. We ran it until the resistor started smoking and then called it a day. Now the car is filthy and a bit battered - weeks of labor and patiently waiting for parts from around the globe - all for 15min of mayhem- but what a BLAST!

I think we are both hooked now - will clean this 959 back up and fit it with a new repro shell with box art paint job and repro decals. Next purchase will be a Lunchbox for my son that he can build himself and bash without fear, and maybe a re-re Kyosho Javelin for me, always wanted one back in the day and seems like it would be a fun build.

And it’s done! Well almost, the shocks all leak pretty badly and won’t hold oil, I think they need new seals.

In the meantime here are some pics of my finished repro shell (Kamtech) with repro decals. Thank god for Tamiya white vinyl masking tape!

Thanks! I remember being really frustrated as a 12 year old trying to paint the body - so much great information on this and other forums with tips and tricks galore. I had a lot more fun this time around!
