I want to start a world-wide racing series 9 years 9 months ago #29475

I am a R/C lover from that States. I am also a child of the most influencial time of the R/C hobby industry (70s-90s). Especially when it comes to R/c Car racing. I too am envolved in full-scale auto racing as well...(i make racing graphics for many ARCA and NASCAR teams)....the "real-deal". It has come to my attention; and is a matter of MY opinion that r/c racing has become too complicated, expensive, and "out-of-reach" for the average "Joe" hear in the states. I trust it is the same else-where around the world. So I am attempting to start an organization/club for VINTAGE R/C CAR Racing. A cluc/organ. that is for individuals which want to race R/C cars competitivly, but don't (or CAN'T) spend a load of money on their hobby. I feel this can also help add interest into the hobby. If others whom have never tried simply because the cost factor of the sport, can enter and compete at a lower investment cost. My idea is to start a racing track/league that only allows "older" models (rc10s, jrx2, rc10l, tamiya grasshopper, kyosho raider, traxxas bullet, ect.) and simple NiMH battery and the oldr 4 min. races to help introduce New people to the sport/hobby.
If anyone of u think this is a good idea; please let me know. BUT!!!!! MAYBE MORE importantly; if u think this is absolutely STUPID......LET ME KNOW!!!!! As I have already set-up the rules, guidlines, and even a VENUE (hear in the states) to get it started. But I have little money and oppertunity, so; I don't want to waste my resources. Please tell me wat u think? Birdman, MadMax, BudLuv, PurEvil, Zeus, and the rest.

I live in a country where the community is quite active in this respect. Vintage meetings are often organised.
Maybe not official races though, there's a Tamiya Challenge (modern cars) for which one would need to travel.
I would definitely join an open class (any mod allowed) Grasshopper series if it were affordable.

Definitely not a stupid idea and I completely agree with you. I have been looking for a such a series for some time now, and someone here in the UK has recently organised an event - see this thread

This will be an informal event with modern electronics etc allowed, but with extra points given to cars running period radios, brushed motors, MSCs, NiCds etc

The same guy also organised a Tamiya DT-02 series for low cost racing.

Older models may be a budget problem on the spare parts.

Have a look at Tamiya Fighter Cup , very big thing for kids. (DT01/02/03 where the DT03 is a real price killer)
google translated

And in Japan the wheelie model races are also a big hit (combined with wheelie soccer)

I do understand that parts and kit availability can b an issue. But that is the beauty of it. There are 100s, if not thousands around the world that sell vintage kits, parts, and items. That would increase their demand and help support those individuals with their sales. PLUS, if u don't think that if Vintage racing increased in popularity; and a need for parts, kits, etc. was needed, that Tamiya ( and other Manu.'s) woulodn't jump all over it like flies to SH!#, u r greatly mitaken. What makes he world go round? MONEY$$$$$$$! If there is $ in it for them, they will support it. All is needed is an ORGANIZED group to lay down rules, guidlines, and events. I have started such a prodject. For more info (here in the US) fell free to email me.

As far as modern electronics and such; my idea is this. The division of "classes" within the series would be the relm of what electronics you run. Example: A "Pure Vint Stock" Class would not only be vintage kits from a particular era; but also require mechanical speedcontrols, 540 johnson motors, no oil dampened shocks, kit issue tires, and 2 channel Rx's. Where a "Vint. Modified" class can have "upgrades" including oil dampened shocks, electric ESC's, lipo batteries, etc. but still only include kits from the "Vintage era". And we can set down rules for multible racing venues. On-road vs Off-road, 1/10, 1/12, car. truck, Monster Truck, 4wd, modified, conversion kit classes, etc. The possibilities are endless, ONLY the interest is. It may be Huge in on area of the world (or country), but not so in another. That's why I feel it should be a "world-wide" organ. versus an independent set of groups.

:woohoo: Nice for the kids. In France, the RC loose it. Same the magazines don't exist more. The shops close one after ones

As much as I appreciate your initiative and would like to believe Tamiya Inc would notice the preference of a large group of their vintage following, in reality the company is a huge multinational with different considerations and always tends to set their own trend (apart from the fact if we, outside Japan, find it very useful).
They would have reissued many decal sheets if anybody were really listening...

I love the idea of it, the nostalgia of "racing" back in the 80's, improving your skills, restricted by what you could afford with your pocket money, taking extra care of your "specialist" RC car that cost you weeks of lawnmowing or xmas present etc...

BUT as soon as you start using words like "Racing" or "Competition" or "Classes" or "Trophies", & add in people who now get paid wages & don't have to wait to buy the cars or replacement parts for them, that's when the competitiveness, anger & crashing start to creep in, & I'm not sure it would be as cheap or as fun as we fondly remember it.
Of course I could be wrong, but it wasn't so long ago that somebody came up with the idea of RC banger racing, for the people who wanted to have fun & weren't particularly interested in speed - have a look at Youtube to see what that's turned into!

What I WOULD like to see is someone starting up a club for scale replica racing, with scale weights & speeds. I think that's why I like scale crawlers - they move like something real & there's no carnage in a scrabble to be first over the line at any cost

Belgian and Dutch fans often come together for such an event as well. :)
Haven't visited myself, venue is in Belgium but it's been growing and I think there's about 80 participants now.
Making a long trail through the Edegem park...
