I do it the other way around as James Bond, he likes his Vodka Martini shaken, not stirred, but i like my cans stirred not shaken. I let the mixing ball run around the bottom of the can for several minutes. While the paint is under pressure I think shaking the can will dissolve even more propelling gas into the paint, this additional gas will leave the paint when it is on the to be painted surface under atmospheric pressure, causing an uneven, orange peel finish.

I shake usually 20-30 sec for the first coat and then 5-10 or so for each extra coat, depending on the brand and thickness of the paint.

For those cans thay says to shake til the ball sound goes away, I do just that...
