Richard's adventure in scale garage and related items. 3 years 2 months ago #63518

For some time now I have wanted to build a scale garage.
The moment that really kicked off the lust was when I saw RC Everyday on Youtube build his scale garage.
He is into Rat Rods and built the garage in a barn style garage, which is exactly the style I want, and I do like Hot Rods as well. One of the reasons I follow his channel.

And we must not forget our own Retro Jonny who has built several garages with help of styrene which is a material I also like to build with.
His garages is outstanding, I will never get to his level, but I can try!

I think my garages will be a combo of wood and styrene and I think I have found where I can have them.
In my current hobby room I have a tall book shelf that measures 41cm deep and 86cm wide on the inside, I can work with that,
As the shelves can move up and down I can make them as high as I want.
I will make the garages as inlay into the book shelf so they can be removed as needed.

Today that book shelf is stuffed with my parts bins, glue and grease and similar items, my metal supply, tire shelf and other various stuff.
That will have to find space somewhere else.

And here the other day I saw this awesome scale garage on FB, this very much the style I'm going after.

In at least one of the scale garage I want to have a rc corner and to make a easy start I ordered some miniature Tamiya boxes from Rob that have a page called IBIFTKH's RC cars on Facebook.
You can also find these boxes on ebay, but you get a better price by contacting him directly on FB.

The boxes comes as a kit that you need to cut and glue together. Also comes with a "manual" that needs to be cut and folded.
My choice was these, but he has nearly all the first 100 cars available and plenty more.

The first one I built was the Hornet

And then these

These was built today

Still have the Celica GRB, Porsche 959 and the BullHead to build.

At least I have started.
This will be a long term build as my other stuff, illness and econmy is what hinder me to build things faster.

One item I think I need to buy is a laminate machine so I can make posters and signs etc.
I also need to see if I can make my Canon copy machine to work.
The program for the printer on my computer do not work with Windows 10.

I also want to make Haynes manuals, those will be made like Jonny did them if I can get my copy machine to work lol.
Computers are not my strong side, so I may struggle a bit :D

Hi Richard, for the Haynes manuals, I'm assuming you have some you want to use as the source material.
You could always scan them in. Then create  your files from the scans.
Looking forward to seeing your garage build come together.
Have you seen 1to10 world, he does some amazing stuff.

Sometimes we need to be silly :D

Yep have several Haynes manuals I want to copy.
Capri Mk2 Mk3, Escort Mk3, Mondeo Mk3, Mondeo Mk1 and from my late father T3 Transporter, Toyota Corolla KE36 is the one I remember right now.

Quoting don't seem to work for me...

Great job, I really like that :)
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

There's definitely appeal/fun in deliberately/artfully making things look bad from the outset rather than “perfect” :D  Looking forward to seeing your progress :y: B)
BTW I only have 2 garage dioramas (3 if you count the Nativity scene I did a while back) – I’d like to do more but each one will take up the space of 2 or 3 vehicles, and I have very little space… =11.0ptThat said, I would really like to do another – a street scene with shop fronts :)

Yep I remember your garages very well Jonny, they are indeed a very inpspiration for me.

I have mentioned a few times elesewhere, but I'm moving later later this year if it goes according to plan.
They new hobby room will be about half the size of that I have now, so I have to come up with some smart funitures to be able to store my stuff and vehicles.
6 vehicles is currently in my living room, I think that number has to increase to at least to the double, and due the small size of the new apartment, which is on top of a garage, I have to invest in some new furniture there as well.
The hobbyroom I have today is approx 2.5x3.5m and the new one will be less than 2.5x2.5 meters and to make it worse, some of the roof goes at a angle so it steals about 1/3 of the room.
Nor been well since mid September, so I have not been able to visit the new place to take measurements, which is about 20 miles from where I live now.
Due the Covid I also try to stay home as much as possible as I'm in the high risk group.

But my plan involves to move the nice/finished models to the living room or hallway at the new place. And then just have project cars at the hobby room.
As I now know what shelf to use to house the scale garages, I can start on that project when I feel for it.

Speaking of the scale garages.
I do plan to have that barn style garage and a bit more modern garage.
The street scene diorama is a very good theme Jonny

As the shelf is 86x41cm, I can put two vehicles in each garage if planning smart, but that may look a bit crowded.
But if I decide to build 3x garages, I can manage to put 6 vehicles into them, but most likely 3.
Not decided what vehicle that will have the honor to live in the garages, but one of them may be my Zakspeed Capri, I have two of those, which non of them is finished :D
Body seems a drag for me, I can do them, but I do not enjoy doing them.
My box of around 10 unpainted bodies is my evidence, lol.

Have already been thinking of lightning inside those garages.
In the barn style I may fit some tiny incandescent bulbs, which I have plenty of.
I bought some GM Truch dashboard ones that are 12v to replace the stupid expensive ones in my Volvo dashboard.
They look like the old Tamiya bulbs, but are for 12v and and are a tad under 5mm in diameter if I remeber the spec correctly,
I don't know if there will be heat issues, so I think I need to make some test examples.

I also have found that my car part/everything hardware shop to carry small wood bits that will be perfect for this build.
The base I think I will build from 18mm chipboard and the sides/roof of 6mm MDF if I can find a shop that do carry those, have not had any luck yet.

Hope my building capabilitys are as good as my plans lol

All my dioramas (1/35) are in a curver bix because of the place they take. I would line to build a garage workshop to. To fit my "lost baby". But no more space to stock . Another possibility is to do a tiny scene in 1/24....
Be safe richard ;)

One solution is to use one of those Ikea Detolf cabinents and make 1:24 or smaller garage dioramas.
I have two of those, one Ikea and one copy and these house my 1:24-1:32 plastic kits, and the other my Capri collection.
The one with plastic kits will deffo be converted to some point.
Now the unbuilt kits are taking up most of the space behind the models.
On Thingiverse there are 3d brackets to fit extra shelfes into those Detolf cabinets.
In stock form there is 3 glass shelfes and the bottom one.

On my weekly shopping round I popped into my local wood sale place, and they actually had 6mm MDF plates in stock.
They was resonable priced at £15, and being 1.2x2.4m I can build plenty of garage walls with just one plate.
Turns out a sheet of 12mm MDF is about the same price as a sheet of chipboard cause the chipboards are now base coated which make them more expensive than before.
So my plan is to buy one sheet of each size, the rest can be very handy for something else.

Could not get any sleep at all last night, so while I was awake some ideas came to mind for the scale garages.
Hmmm, think I need to start this project a bit sooner than I planned lol.
