thanks again jr ive got some swarfega in the man sanctuary (my shed) il try that later,my fox spur gear was really caked in it but the rest of the gears came out sparkling. jtf |

Never thought about it but was gonna suggest cillit bang - the black will be aluminium dust & grease ground into & impregnated in the plastic & I was thinking the acid in Cillit would dissolve the ally grit allowing the grease to wash away. Bet JR's 'breadmaker' would work on it too. I use the old Cillit bang on all the brass bits nowadays as I find vinegar (Acetic acid) & coke (Phosphoric acid) can be a bit tedious if you're in a hurry (10mins vs overnight)
