I have not heard of early/late differences on the Hilux.
yours could be normal SRB UJ connected with a steel bar? I'm sure that would have been the economical way to replace worn out Hilux prop shafts.

I went to check the prop shafts of my Hi Lux and compared them to my Bruiser's ones.
All of them, without any exceptions, are sliding ones. Bruiser, Mountaineer and Hi Lux manuals also describes them as sliding. Still remains the Blazing Blazer (which i still don't have in my collection) to confirm, but as it's the same chassis as the Hi Lux, i doubt that the pro shafts are different.

I tend to follow Larbut's theory that the worn ones got replaced by the previous owner.

Like you say, looks like mine have been replaced at some point then. It's a tidy job though, the flats are machined not filed/chiselled/gnawed!
