Dogbone repairs 11 years 8 months ago #12204

G'day Guys,
Has anyone out there ever successfully replaced the drive pins on Tamiya metal dogbones or universal shafts? I have some badly worn Dyna Blaster universal shafts needing attention!
Cheers,
Ed

Yes mate....
You need: a vice, some tubing with a bore only slightly bigger than the pin, preferrably some accurate calipers (Or know someone who's got some), a file & some piano wire (Hard wire) of EXACTLY the same diameter as the original pins.

Measure the existing pin with the calipers & buy piano wire of EXACTLY the same size. If you can't get exactly the right size, get as near as you can but smaller, then flatten it a bit with a small hammer so it'll fit tightly in the ball. If you have to do this, it's also worth smearing it with threadloc or CA glue before you fit it, just to fill any gaps & stop it wobbling loose.
To fit:
Cut a bit of tube about twice the length of the pin, & position it over the pin.
Use the vice to press the free end of the pin through until it's flush with the ball. Sometimes they're easy, others can be quite tight & need some gentle heat to expand the ball & make it easier, but once you get it moving it'll go fairly easily (Some are knurled/deformed to grip in the ball).
Cut a piece of piano wire slightly longer than the pin (Longer so you can tidy up any damage afterwards)
Still using your tube & vice, use the new pin to finish pressing out the old one & insert the new.
The vice is likely to damage the end of the new pin, so tidy it up with a file to the right length.
If it feels too easy to press the new pin in, do the job again but this time deform the middle of the pin a bit & use threadloc etc to get a tighter fit
