Hi there
I've just very resently aquired a rough rider as i'd always wanted one and upon pulling it apart to clean and restore it have noticed a few differences from other cars i've seen and even the manual so i was thinking it might be an early car before the english manual came out?The major differences apart from whats gerenerally called a mk1 car is no bracing at the very top of the front shock tower and where the chassis bolts to the gear case there is no extra material where the screws go in if this makes any sense? (but the material is pictured in the manual) i realise i will need to post pics of this somehow, anyhow i was really just wondering the time line of this car? I presume it's an early car if its before the manual so was really just wondering if indeed there was an earlier japanese version of this car? Cheers Peter |

The easiest way to spot an early one is that the early ones have M2 screws instead of moulded bosses on the front uprights to locate the springs.
Other things are: Early have 2x lugs at the lower rear of the gearbox to hold the plastic cage, later ones have 1x thick 1-piece lump. Early have 2x bearing recesses in each rear wishbone, later ones have only the outer recess. Not 100% sure, but I think it was only the early version that used slotted M2 screws, later may have had the more usual slotted/cross head M2 screws. I've also heard that the early ones had thinner front arms, but I haven't got both versions to compare to say for sure. Lars would probably be your man for that

Could've saved some typing there & just looked at the pics....
Looks like an early one to me, & reminds me, the black bumper is another sign (As opposed to beige on later ones)

That was some interesting reading Waterbok! I knew there wre Mk1s & 2s, but never realised there were so many other twiddly little differences!
However, I may have just missed it, but I didn't see anything about the lack of gussets at the top of the front uprights, just under the top shock mount - there's usually a small 45 degree reinforcing gusset under there, but it appears to be missing from Pedroscott's. Edou, you know how I'm always awkward... I'm NOT a Tamiyaclub member, but using Waterbok's links I can read their forum(?)

Yeh i must admit i've read all those posts but i dont hear any mention of that brace on the top of the front shock tower or for that matter the extra material where the gearcase bolts to the chassis?

One would need a RR specialist for those questions (which I am not).
Luckily there are a few here on TB... Eddrick, I think anyone can read the posts on TC but I reckoned TS meant being able to post messages with "access". |
