Ok, here is an image of the speed controller disassembled in order. Whats happening is that the sweeper arm for forward and reverse is getting super hot instantly. I feel that maybe something is missing from the assembly that is causing a short? It will go forward and reverse but only as I near the ends of the resistor.  I also took a picture of the wiring to the underside of the speed controller.

Hi,
I think you have the sequence of the parts wrong.
The "flanged pipe" should go on the top, just below the nut, with the flange pointing up.
None of the washers should be there, if I recall correclty.
