i have bought this ESC now so just have to wait a few days for it to arrive.
would it hurt to start ripping out all the old stuff now or should i wait until the ESC arrives and do it then?

Couldn't hurt at all. The servo I would leave in there for now though... :)

Keep us posted on the arrival of the electronic update! :cheer:

I just thought of something... I'll have a look if the connectors on your receiver and ESC will match.
That might be something to take in account beforehand. So there's no new delay when the controller arrives.

Here's the manual if you want to take a peek yourself :

The extra fuse is recommended - I'm thinking they're just trying to limit the warranty a bit. :S
You could do that of course although I don't foresee any problem - unless the motor short circuits.
The fuse would only be a protection if that happens.

Note that this fuse box should be installed in between the ESC and the battery.
Contrary to the MSC set up where it is placed between the MSC and the motor - guarding the latter.
I'd get a more aesthetic box if you decide to do that... ;)
Never had any problem without it myself.

The list of wire colours (polarities) in the manual is just a comprehensive overview of the possible connections.
And it is incomplete because some older models have reversed polarity.
But I think you're good on that.
To be able to attach them to each other, the receiver and the ESC should have (more or less) the same connector.
I say more or less because some are close and can be made to fit.
The ESC you ordered uses JR type connection at least.
Don't know all the info by heart so I'll check on that...

The motor should have some capacitors installed but you could post a picture to be sure...
I'll do a little research on that too.

:silly:

I think I made a mistake on that remark...

there is some sort of capacitor (i think) on the motor, but it joins between + and - connections. the manual for the ESC says 2 capacitors, 1 from each pole to the body of the motor?the original fuse was on the negative cable between the MSC and the motor.

ESCs have _instructions_ ?!?!?! :silly:

edit - just to clarify, I've run MSCs & ESCs with all sorts combinations of motors (with or without bits soldered on), batteries & RXs without worrying about the fine print too much, and the only time I've had any bit of electric/electronic equipement permanently fail was an ESC that had been overheated by it's previous owner & the waterproofing had failed, that was underated for the motor I was using ... which happened to be on a buggy that was stuck in some mud at the bottom of a big puddle at the time :D

edit 2: unless you count the MSC that melted - 13 turn 540 motor on 9.6V :D

I wish I did a Google search on the old Futaba receiver before I melted a brand new servo...

But it's usually pretty straightforward.
I only bothered to get the manual to check for the kind of connection.

JR (plug) should fit vintage Acoms right? Though maybe loosely.
