How to safely remove glued tyres from rims.

Step 1: Use a pot large enough to fit all the wheels you wish to remove tyres from and fill to about half way with water, place onto the stove top and bring to the boil.

Step 2: Place all the wheels into the boiling water and leave for about 3 minutes (of course it doesn’t matter if you leave for longer)

Step 3: Remove a wheel from the pot and place onto a towel on the bench top (Safety first, remember to use tongs to handle the wheel from the pot, dishwashing gloves may also be good) Then holding the wheel push down on the sidewall of the tyre (you could use your thumb or a wooden spoon for this) as the glue releases you should hear a crackling sound, if it does not release with minimal to a little effort, then it needs longer on the boil. These tyres were only glued on 1 side, if yours have been glued on both you will need to complete Steps 2 and 3 on each side.

Step 4: Completely remove the tyre from the rim ready for cleaning and reuse. Once you have finished removing all tyres you should find that there is minimal residue on the rims and both the rims and tyres should be reusable if they weren’t damaged to start with.

Step 5: Clean up the kitchen, wash and put everything you’ve used away . This is a very important step for keeping Wifey happy.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

:woohoo:
Very interesting!
The CA glue doesn't support high temperatures :y:
Another method, you can use debonder but with some risks for the plastic

Depending on the kind of plastic used for the rims start with low temperature (60) to prevent the plastic getting soft and deforming the rims. And test in between rising the temp.

HI!... Good write up. I have tried this, plus the oven set-up and the CA glue liquid deactivator. None has ever worked for me. The CA glue I use apparently is VERY strong. 99% of the time the tires are so far gone that it's just the rims I want to save. So I just use a hobby knife and trim as close as I can to the rim and then put them on the lathe at work and turn them down just enough to get rid of the rubber. :y:

Step 5 is essential .

Great write up
