It could also be aluminium dipped in Caustic Soda. Caustic Soda etches aluminium like that (I learned the hard way ) -Lars Signature now gets correct formatting if you edit it in your Profile. Use normal BBcode if you want.

if it was dipped in caustic soda wouldnt it look more unevenly etched?
the surface is very smooth. anyhow i think it is a really cool part to compensate the missing original part, i find it very intriguing. |

I'd say it looks fine sand cast - the way the edges are broken is too consistent (& time consuming) to have been machined. Would explain the finish too. That being the case, I'd say semi-mass produced by a small firm. I can't see 30g (Less than a pouch of bakky) being enough to keep the front end down though! (Unless there's the option to mount the battery somewhere more sensible on a wheeler?)
