Monster Beetle complete restoration 11 years 7 months ago #12884

Hi guys,

A few time ago i managed to get a Monster Beetle from a local sale. It was in a pretty good shape with no broken or missing parts ! Even the front lights support were OK what is extremely rare.
Anyway, after dissasembling, cleaning, replacing all the gear bushings with ball bearings and repainting the body in box art i think it will remain next to my other models on the shelf !

It looked like this when it arrived :

Looking close at the body, you can see the poor paint quality on the window chromes from the previous owner !

Broken wipers...i'm still looking for them...but i'll think i will get some from the re-re Sand scorcher as they're easily available on the net

Apparently the body has been painted with a brush....it really looks bad !

Now it's time to start removing all the paint that's on it. I managed this by applying brake fluid on the body...the most part went off but this ugly grey paint won't go ! So i just decided to paint like it was and have a look afterwards.

Body is ready to be painted now

Second coat and so on until the grey paint dissapears completely

Once the body is completely red painted..it's time to paint the details and mouldings :

The final pics of the body will be shown at the end of this thread

Now it's time to start working on the macanical part. Once dissasembled every single part has been cleaned up

Transmission

The reassembling process :
I kept the MSC because i want it to be like it was oririnally...Besides that i don't think that this Beetly will run that much...it might just run a few times inside from time to time

Front suspension arms, greased and adjusted

Building up the transmission. I replaced all the bushings with ball bearings

The Bearings !

Once the transmission reassembled, it's time to fit the rear arms with bearing too and install them

Hmmmm wich motor should i mount :woohoo: :woohoo:

Easy question ha ha ha

I got a new pair of tires fittetd on...so this will look perfect on the almost new rims !
I still have to put the bearings and mount the wheels on the rest of the car.

Ok done, looks awesome to me

After applying the decals on the body, it's time to have a look at the whole Monster Beetle...

As i told you before, i still need to fit the wipers as soon as i got them.
I hope you enjoyed.
More restorations will follow shortly.

Looks good - nice save on the decals :Y:

But ... how much grease?!?!? I think you used enough there for 50 to a 100 gearboxes  That much will just increase drag - I only use a dab on each interface.

Hi Jonny,

Yeah, i thought that someone would notice it sonner or later.
I ordered a pair of "the best repro decals" ( as described on the E-Bay post ) and it resulted to be real crappy ones ! So i decided to reaply the old ones that were in a quite good shape !
They will remain there until i'll find real good ones or even original ones.

If someone know good repro ones or have any for sale don't hesitate to contact me ;)

And yes, you're right, there's a bit too much grease in that gearbox ! But as the Beetle won't run that much....i'll leave it like that. Thanks for the remark
