Richard's Bigwig resto project. 2 years 5 months ago #69475

Today I wanted to clean something and doing a resto job is good as any.
My best friend owned this in early 90s, but he later lost interest in rc cars so he gave this to me many years ago.
It has not seen use since then so there is lots of dust and oil on this thing, particular the front and gearboxes.
He used oil in the gearbox and grease elsewhere.
The only thing missing is the speed controller and a few screws here and there.
It used to feature double steel antennas, but they have gone as well. I think the reason it is as good as it is, is due the antennas which saved it in rollovers which did not happen that often.

I have the bumper for it, but the back rear tabs are broken. I think I have a new bumper somewhere.

Broken upper deck which needs to be replaced.
Hard to come by it seems. Anyone happen to have a spare?

Oil have have collected dust over the years. There is very little road grime on this car as it was mainly driven on asphalt, medium size gravel driveway and grass.

Tires are very worn and will be replaced.
Greatful it has minimal damages.

And usual scratches on the underside, but not too bad.

This one I will replace as few parts as possible to make it survivor as I have known this car all my life.

I have now taken it apart and all metal parts is being soaked in WD40 bath as we speak.

Good parts
Complete, minus some part of the MSC.
Body is mostly good.
Minimal damage.
Complete radio gear and motor + box.

Bad parts
Broken front bumper - think I have a spare new one.
Dogbone cups are worn, both wheel and gearbox side.
Missing a few bolts.
Damage to one upper front suspension arm as wheel touched the screw for the metal plate.
Upper deck is broken.
Worn tires.
Wheels needs to be resurfaced or replaced.

Think this will be a easy resto.

I have a new original body painted but without stickers if you want. If there are common parts with terra scorcher boom and similar chassis maybe I should have. But no more specifical bigwig parts.

Thank you!
Yep Tony has some parts for the Bigwig, but 10 quid for each gearbox output or drive axle do add up.
And I pay 25% VAT either in the shop or when it arrives so I have to calculate what is most needed.
Also needs the 3x8 counter sunk screws and 3 of those 2x6 screws which is common with Hotshot etc.

Thanks for the offer of the body.
I might take you up on that.
But last time I got stung by the customs.

Got all the plastic parts washed today.
Not a single item was broken beside the the upper deck and front bumper which I mentioned earlier-nice!
Not even the TA02 type steering knuckles.

I sent a message to a norwegian chap that has loads of NIB parts, but sadly he had non of those I need.
Tomorrow I think I will sit down and check what parts is needed before I order.

The broken front bumper had their tubes at the rear stuck in the chassis.
It was not possible to remove them as the screws turned them.
My solution was to cut a slot in them and then hold the tube ends with a flat screwdriver while undoing the screw on the other end..

Parts drying.
Later I will try to polish them to see if I can bring the orginal color/shine back.

Exhausted today from all the snow so don't think there will be any progress today..

But yesterday I did complete the cleaning of the metal parts.
After being soaked in WD40 for days, I brushed the dirt off with a toothbrush and let them air dry for a bitt on paper towel.

Next I dropped the parts in a box full of hot tap water and dish wash soap.
I like to use Haribo boxes for this task.

Then I hand shaked the box for 5-10 minutes like a washing mashine,
Circular motion and back and forth many times.

Then I wiped each part with a towel.
Parts came out good. Some will need a bit of polish.
The drivecups was cleaned by using cotton swabs.

The only part that has not been cleaned yet is the steering rack and wheels.
Rubber is still soft as day one thankfully.

If any happens to have a MSC for the Bigwig, I'm intrested to buy.

I definitely remember having one, though whether it survived the "great eBay sale of a massive box of assorted RC parts I'll never need again" of a few years back I couldn't say.

There's a very finite number of places for me to look, so it shouldn't take long :)

Hmm, it was more dirty, worn & incomplete than I would have liked, but I do have the section I think you're looking for - minus the 8.4v adaptor, and note the wear through the weave (the cable insulation itself is fine. The red wire on the moving bit is damaged, but the screw that holds the two sections together (which is a funny size IIRC) is there.

If it's any use you can have it - although if you want it tracked post (9 GBP  ) I'd rather you covered that :)
