Lem, I just realised you had created the shell yourself, super job. Don't let it melt in the sun lol. I am working on my shell to strengthen it on the inside where the joins are and also it needs a lot of tidying up on the outside to make it look good. I had very slight warpage when printing.

Thx Lee,
Originally i made these classic cars while working on the game Crashday . That was back in 2005. Together with a czechian artist i made 4 classic cars as free addon for the game. Instead of 3 tuning stages, the 1st stage for my cars was always restauration. Now i have at least 4 different models of the Simca, 1 game model, 1 high resolution render model, 1 rib cage model and finally the 3d printable model... Attachments: |

I'm always impressed by the modelling work in racing sims... Never thought it could be a good basis for 3D printing!
Thanks to highlight this, Lemsko, I believe now there is quite a few open source games/models available, which could be good source for 3D printing... Great work, in anycase. Doing some parts i already a way of scratching my head, because I have to find the right way to deal with some type of forms, but what you have here is just another level. I can't imagine the number of hours required to do this... I buy kits to built and ru(i)n them

the game models are around 7000-8000 polygons, i think todays game models are around 30k-60k, so much more detailed. On my models the smooth surface comes from telling the game engine to round it with smoothing groups. if you would print them you would see every polygon, the printer doesnt understand face smoothing, it simply goes poly by poly.
I had to rebuild the model from scratch. Of course its much easier if you can model around an existing model instead of using 3view drawings. Here are the desktop renderings: |
