Ok I'm sad to still be thinking about it, but in the case of the 'Hopper, motor orientation, rotation, polarity, brush spring orientation & number of gearbox stages all point to this setup being properly designed/thought about... or was it an accident/coincidental? If I get REALY bored, I might have a wander through a selection of manuals to see what other setups are like.

It's also left us with an answer as to why a kit Grasshopper is always faster going backwards (re brush pressure & brush spring orientation)
