After some investigation, there is 3 different Fox models within the vintage release, aka Mk1 and Mk2.
Very early production had dampers with internal springs under the cap, round damper tool, transmission case and upper arms without downtravel limiters and dry driveshafts. This goes under Mk1 and 5851 model number. Mid production had the same as above, but with oval damper tool and factory lubed driveshafts. It now featured a gearbx with downtravel limiters and same on the upper suspension arms. Late roduction run had the same features as above, but now have dampers with the normal rubber hat seal we are used to see on the CVA shocks. This has the 58051 model number and a regarded as a Mk2 NovaFox is therefor really a Mk3. I belive my Fox is a mid production one because it was delivered with the oval damper tool , has the internal spring dampers, and it also had lubed driveshafts. Gearbox is the downtravel limiter variant too. |

I found this on FB and I fell in love how this looks.
Thinking of doing a copy ish of this. Owner/builder is Martin Gordon Mine will retain the orginal bumper and maybe use the orginal style MCI decals. The vehicle above has a Kyosho Turbo Scorpion wing and mount and I think it suits the Fox brilliantly Paint is Pearl White. What do you think? I love the orginal style, but I also love that one above...

What is the oval damper tool? Mine has spring inside shocks.

It's the tool to set the floating piston to the right depth before fitting the cap. The first version of the CVA damper had a round tool that most people forgot to remove after setting the floating piston, thus the cap could not be screwed all the way down so the damper was too long and set pressure on the suspension. Mid production got a oval tool so it was impossible to leave on after setting the floating piston. And because of the habbit from ovner from the first run, the designers now featured downtravel limiter to the rear suspension. The yellow oval tool can be seen here to the left of the screws. Is the 3 with a oval hat and a raised circle in the middle. Here are the round tool. Picture is one of Jonny Retro threads..

Thank you Richard. My fox has this system. With a tiny screw in the middle of the piston and a hard spring on this one.

If your gearbox have downtravel limiters, your have a mid production car Both versions eit internal spring are a very early one, within the first year of production. |

I think you have the first edition as it has the round tool. You did not stated if you fit it in your damper or not, but it do not beleng in there. It's just the get the right amount of oil in the damper. And was not able to see if it had down travel limiter on the transmission. Basicly a triangle on the rear upper suspension arm that bottoms out on a edge on the gearbox. This is located on the front of the gearbox. Can't find a picture right now, but the downtravel suspension stop is clearly visible in step 22 in the manual. I may take a picture. If your car do not have this feature, you have a first edition car for sure Edit: Found a picture. If your car miss this aka smooth suspension arm and no bulky boxy thingy out of the gearbox, you have the early Mk1 type. This is only a thing on mid and late production cars, and are most common. |
