Sorry if I'm a bit late, but have you got the tool for putting the helicoils in? - normally this would be a rod with a slot in the end, but at M2 you might get away with winding the insert onto an old M2 screw & using that as your insertion device. Normally you'd also need a special tap, but again, at M2 & into soft material, I'm guessing you won't need that either...

Nope, don't have any special tools but I was planning on (CA) glueing them in - like I did on the steering more or less.
I reckon the diameter of an M2 helicoil will be about 2.5mm.
With a 3mm hole I can use an old screw inside the helicoil and glue that into the available space quite easily.
If I ever get to receive them helicoils, that is...

Hey, a birthday present! :cheer:
Suddenly the helicoils are in my mailbox. Must have been given to a neighbour who kept them for three days...
Quite happy, even though they're not exactly what I ordered.
I selected the 2.5D version (5.5mm length) and received 1.5D (3mm length).
See if I can work with that though...

Good foresight I didn't cut the stainless rods (to fill up the carbon) to length yet, in case something like this happened.

I don't think I can work with the 3mms. They're just too short for this purpose. :(

But also :
What is it about this little project that I get all kinds of stuff that has different specs from what I ordered?
Having to rethink it all and/or yet again order new parts...

It's because the thread you're using has an infelicitous number ... it's 13569 - add the first number to the third (1+5), deduct the second number from the sixth (9-3) and you're left with 666 - the Number of The Beast!

Discovery suggested the beast was Caesar Nero! What's he got to do with my crossmembers? :silly:

But I have to admit this last one (with the helicoils) is due to my own technical ignorance...
The 5.5mm spec is the insert length, differing from the length that is measured before useage.
Well communicated by the seller, I have to say.
Since I will not be fitting them in the way they were specifically designed for, I'm gonna have to use small sleeves to get the helicoils a bit deeper inside the hollow carbon - I'll be needing 2mm ID and 3mm OD tube of some sort for that...

This one'll have to go back to the drawing board...
Glueing in M4s on the DF-01 steering assembly was alright but it is not going to work on M2 helicoils.
All started with the carbon tube unexpectedly being the wrong size.

Suggestion - someone else was recently talking about "chemical metal". It's a polyester based 2-pack metal-dust-loaded resin, which can supposidly be drilled & tapped once set. Most brands of the stuff available in the UK are rubbish, but the US version "JB Weld" is fantastic stuff, & does exactly what it says on the packet.

I'm pretty sure if you were to load the ends of your carbon tube with this stuff, then drill & tap it (M2), it should do the job

That sounds like something to investigate further. :y:
I think I'd need a proper insertion tool to work with the M2 helicoils...
