I don't think anyone outside Tamiya can give a definate answer, but they do seem to be very keen on doing things in pairs, both 1st time around and re-re's, - Buggy Champ & Rough Rider, Holiday Buggy & Sand Rover, Hotshot & Boomerang, Montero & this VW, Hornet & Grasshopper ... it's not a big stretch to think FAV & Wild One

The sides is also roundish enough, thay are actually more square on the 1:1.. See how round the bumper is on the pic I added, the Tamiya one is much more flat in the middle... Attachments:
